VITO's BAT Knowledge Centre has started a new BAT study for sustainable water use.

This study will focus on sectors that use a lot of water or that are economically highly dependent on water as well as on activities with a significant impact on water, independent of the sector. The BAT study will provide an update of the environmentally friendly techniques that can contribute to the three-step strategy in industry and agriculture: prevention, limitation & sustainable and safe meeting of the water demand, where safe means as few risks as possible for people and the environment. In addition, it will be examined how to take into account: the right water (‘fit for use’ principle), in the right place, at the right time. With this BAT study, it is therefore the intention to pursue sustainable water use in Flemish industry and agriculture, in particular to minimize the chance of periods of water scarcity and drought problems.

The scope, approach and finality of this study will be discussed with the members of the advisory committee on September 18, 2023.
